1880-1932. English critic and biographer, a
member of the Bloomsbury Group of writers and
artists. He wrote Landmarks in French
Literature 1912. The mocking and witty
treatment of Cardinal Manning, Florence
Nightingale, Thomas Arnold, and General
Gordon in Eminent Victorians 1918 won him
recognition. His biography of Queen Victoria
1921 was more affectionate.
